Answer:

Many years ago, the prescription for lower back pain was bed rest but research has proven that long term bed rest may worsen your pain and slow your recovery. Gentle movements and exercise to your pain tolerance help reduce the inflammation and natural protective splinting and hastens the healing process.

Answer:

A rotator cuff repair means that as much as your tendon has been fixed, it has not healed. Healing of the actual tendon happens at approximately four weeks. It is advised that your arm remains in your sling for at least three weeks minimum[ or as directed by your Orthopaedic surgeon). Some surgeons advocate free use of the shoulder after 10-14 days BUT NO lifting, pulling, pushing or carrying anything heavy or any other activity requiring effort. This is a general rule, so please always strictly follow your Orthopaedic surgeon or physiotherapist instructions, as each team has a tailored rehabilitation protocol following surgery.

Answer:

Pelvic floor strengthening is essential following a Hysterectomy. This is extremely surgeon-dependent, but generally, the safest time is between 6-8 weeks after your procedure. Your physiotherapist will guide you through the pelvic floor programme and introduce general body exercises as you progress. In the interim, walking at an average pace is highly recommended to maintain cardiovascular health and prevent post-operative complications. Always aim to keep your mobility within safe parameters.

Answer:

This is not recommended and will endanger your recovery. The primary goal following ACL surgery is to protect the graft, and is achieved by the use of a brace and crutch support for at least six weeks post-op. Be aware that this is also surgeon-dependant. Another criteria used to determine brace-less support is adequate quadriceps integrity.

What is Physiotherapy ?

Physiotherapists are medical, allied healthcare professionals who assist in maintaining, restoring and treating injuries, illnesses and conditions that impact or impair normal function. In South Africa, Physiotherapists are first-line practitioners (a doctor’s referral is not necessary) equipped to examine, identify, diagnose, and provide a prognosis in physio-related clinical presentations. Several skills, physical interventions, exercise therapy, patient education, rehabilitation and preventative measures are employed to assist patients in obtaining their highest functional levels.

Physiotherapists can assist in various clinical conditions, injury and dysfunction.

In-Hospital care ranges from pre and post-operative surgical and orthopaedic patients, including cardiothoracic and neurosurgical cases, post-trauma, medical, paediatric, gynaecological, pre and post-birth, neurological and a host of other clinical conditions. These services are provided in ICU,s, high care units, special wards and general wards.

Physiotherapists will utilise chest Physiotherapy techniques, rehabilitation in and out of bed, devise and advise on home care programmes.

Out-patient care for simple and complex orthopaedic presentations, cervicothoracic and lumbar back pain, sport injuries (prevention and rehabilitation), neurological rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary rehabilitating, management of specific chest conditions, paediatric care, pre and post-natal care, exercise therapy and so much more.
